Cats vs. Everything Else — A Binary Classification Problem

Image
Pre-word — This article is fairly technical, so bear with me 😆, but I’ll try to keep it simple as possible. Human intelligence is a multifaceted and dynamic cognitive faculty, encompassing diverse capacities such as problem-solving, creativity, emotional understanding, and adaptability, allowing individuals to navigate complex challenges and thrive in varied environments. — ChatGPT 3.5 Basically, humans are an intelligent species. Why? Well, it's because we can divide everything into, Cats and Non-Cats. Let’s talk about cats 🐈 Ok 👍 If I ask you if this is a picture of a cat, you’d probably say yes unless you think this is a mango. Anyway, the answer is a Yes or a No. This is known as a “Binary Classification Problem” — I know, pretty big words for such a simple question. But how do computers say whether this is cat picture or not. To us an image is a set of colors arranged in a very specific way. To a computer an image is basically 3 matrices of equal dimensions(say n x m). To b...

The Life of a Pioneer: Eng. D. J. Wimalasurendra

It was 17 th Septem ber 1874 our motherland was able to witness the birth of a real mastermind. He was Eng.Wimalasurendra who was born in Galle. He received the school education under the shade of mother Ananda. Thereafter he followed his higher studies in civil engineering at ‘The Ceylon Technical College’ and graduated in 1893. Later he moved onto the Faraday House in England to master in Electrical engineering.                  He was able to gain both the associated memberships of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) UK. That combination of fields made the atmosphere for him, to redefine the power history of Ceylon.            He started his career as a field overseer, at the department of public works in 1893. Then he was promoted to the positions of Inspector and junior assistant engineer. ...

Mechatronics Engineers’ Role in 2024

Image
Mechatronics engineers are essential to the current world because they create and construct intricate systems that combine computer, electronic, and mechanical engineering principles. Mechatronics engineers are in high demand in a variety of industries, including automotive, manufacturing, aerospace, healthcare, and energy, as technology advances. In order to design and create electro-mechanical systems, the multidisciplinary area of mechatronics engineering incorporates the concepts of mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering. With their understanding of these three fields, mechatronics engineers design effective and efficient systems. The demand for mechatronics engineers is being driven by several factors, including: The rise of automation: As more and more industries adopt automation technologies, the need for mechatronics engineers to design, develop, and maintain these systems will continue to grow. The growth of robotics: Robotics is...

Will engines take on Batteries?

Image
WILL ENGINES TAKE ON BATTERIES? A small portion of the world’s population is undertaking great endeavours to exceed the normal intelligence of the majority, in terms of ROBOTS. It could be threatening or might be flourishing nevertheless the game has been started remarkably. Though at the beginning robots were large, like the long lives of people gradually decreased, the size of robots also diminished and nowadays tiny robots are made which are fistfuls. When the size decreased mainly they were powered by batteries. Now researchers have been developing conditions to replace  combustion engines  instead of batteries.   A research team consisting of mechanical engineers from  Cornell   University  went through an experiment along with a colleague from Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and developed a tiny robot which can be handled using a combustion engine. The magazine  Journal Science  had reserved some pages to get written in ...
